Why You Need LFS Shield: Freight Fraud Is Coming for You

One bad load can close a small trucking company.

This is a war on carriers

I've been in this business 25 years, and I'm angry. Not at the brokers doing it right. At the people stealing from truckers who already run on thin margins.

The numbers are not small. Verisk CargoNet estimates cargo theft losses at:

$725 million

The American Trucking Associations reports strategic cargo theft, driven by fake paperwork and hijacked identities, is up 1,500% since 2021 (source). The FBI has warned that criminals impersonate brokers and carriers with spoofed emails, look-alike web addresses and phone numbers that only work for a short time.

"They don't need to rob your truck. They just need you to skip one step."

It almost got us

A fake shipper came at LFS. Real company name. Clean request. Professional website. That website was eight days old.

They added a little extra to the real company's web address. Your eye reads the brand name and skips the rest. The FBI lists added prefixes and suffixes as a standard look-alike trick.

LFS Shield compared the web address, the email and the phone number against the real company's own official sources. It researched how old the domain was, where it was registered and whether the lane even made sense. Then it flagged it as fraud and showed us, in plain words, exactly why.

The only time we got scammed

The only time we got scammed, it came through a legitimate load board. Not the load board's fault. The scammers hide behind legitimate names.

The email looked like the real broker. It wasn't. They used stolen PODs. Here's what I believe: someone inside a legitimate brokerage was working with a scam company, pushing them the paperwork and taking something like 60% instead of a normal 20% commission.

FreightWaves has documented this same pattern: spoofed email addresses a letter off, rate confirmations that look real, BOLs sent to a third-party email. And FMCSA says the real broker on a fraudulently brokered load is often a victim too.

What one scam costs you

A $5,000 or $10,000 scam is enough to put a small trucking company out of business. For a one- or two-truck fleet, a $4,000 to $5,000 hit can do it.

Diesel's in the tank on credit. The card company wants its money and the premium is due. The driver needs to be paid.

And it doesn't stop at the carrier. Factors, insurers and every honest player in the load take the hit. Everyone prices in the cost of fraud, and the carrier pays for it.

"No trucks, you don't eat. Lose the carrier and the whole chain starves."

What LFS Shield does about it

You can't check every web address, every header and every rate con version at 2 a.m. with a driver waiting. LFS Shield does.

  1. It checks the people. Domain age, registration, verified phone, legal name and FMCSA authority. Then it finds where the sender really is and turns confirmed fraudsters in to the FBI, FMCSA and DOT automatically.
  2. It checks the email. Sender versus reply-to, look-alike letters, bad links and lures.
  3. It checks the load. Load board poster versus real broker, two rate cons, changed pickup or delivery, broken POD lineage.
  4. It checks the money. Changed factor or bank account, competing invoices. Verify before money moves.
  5. It explains and saves proof. Plain-English why, a safe next step and a private evidence vault.

Shield came out of three-plus years of in-house beta. It's built into LFS, LFS AOS and Freight Broker Complaint, it works with LFS Compliance, and MT runs on it. Get the full rundown in what LFS Shield does.

Why we give LFS Shield away

People ask me what the catch is. There isn't one, and there's no upsell coming later either. Price never entered into it, and neither did proving we're the best. What happened to us could happen to anybody hauling freight, so Logistical Forwarding Solutions decided to stand in front of all of it.

Free is our choice. Protecting carriers, brokers and dispatchers is the work we signed up for. It keeps everyone tied to a load in business, and every scam eventually rolls downhill onto the small carrier.

Look at who that small carrier is. The American Trucking Associations reports that, per U.S. DOT figures from June 2025, 91.5% of the nearly 580,000 active motor carriers registered with FMCSA run 10 or fewer trucks. Those companies are American trucking.

We won't profit from Shield. We'll measure it by whether small fleets in this country keep their doors open and grow.

FAQ

Why do I need LFS Shield if I already check FMCSA?

FMCSA tells you if a company has authority. It doesn't tell you if the email in front of you is really from them. LFS Shield checks the whole chain.

Can I get scammed through a legitimate load board?

Yes. Scammers hide behind legitimate names on legitimate load boards. It's not the load board's fault.

How much can one scam cost a small carrier?

For a one- or two-truck fleet, a $4,000 to $5,000 hit can put them under.

What do I do if I got scammed?

Report it to the FBI at ic3.gov and to FMCSA's National Consumer Complaint Database, then file your case at freightbrokercomplaint.com.

Is LFS Shield free?

Zero cost, select companies first in the door. Small fleets are most of trucking, and keeping them alive is the mission. Request early access.
